Are you ready for a day trip to Miyajima and Hiroshima? These two destinations should definitely be on your list when visiting Japan, especially if you’re a history buff and want to experience traditional Japanese culture. And with your JR Pass, you’re all set to explore these places at a more affordable cost!
Miyajima Island
First stop, Miyajima! The UNESCO World Heritage site of Itsukushima Shrine is one of the most famous shrines in Japan, and it’s not hard to see why. The floating Torii Gate is simply breathtaking, especially during high tide. To avoid the crowds, it’s best to start your day early and head to Miyajima first thing in the morning.
To get there, take the shinkansen from Shin-Osaka station to Hiroshima Station, then transfer to the JR Sanyo line train going to Miyajimaguchi Station. From there, take the JR Ferry to Miyajima, which is included with your JR Pass. It’s a quick 10-minute ride and you’ll be on the island in no time!
Once you’re on Miyajima, make sure to visit the Itsukushima Shrine, Daisho-in Temple, and Mount Misen for stunning views of the island. And don’t forget to say hello to the wild deer that roam around the area. For foodies, be sure to try fresh oysters, grilled oysters, and Momiji Manju – all local specialties that will tantalize your taste buds.
Hiroshima
After a fun-filled day in Miyajima, it’s time to head to Hiroshima. Take the JR Ferry back to Miyajimaguchi Station, then hop on the train back to Hiroshima Station. Once you’re there, take advantage of your JR Pass and hop on the Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus, which is included in the pass. This bus will take you to the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Park and Museum – two key sights that should not be missed.
If you’re pressed for time, these two attractions are located close to each other, so you can easily walk from one to the other. And for dinner, don’t forget to try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki at Nagataya, which is conveniently located nearby the Peace Memorial Park.
After a long day of exploring, it’s time to head back to Osaka. Simply return to Hiroshima Station and take the shinkansen back to Shin-Osaka. Congratulations on an amazing day trip filled with history, culture, and delicious food!
