…Continued from Top 10 Things You MUST Do In Iceland (Part 1)
#5 Pack a picnic and enjoy it at waterfalls
Besides Gullfoss at the Golden Circle, Iceland has many famous and beautiful waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. At Seljalandsfoss, you can even walk behind the waterfall, which is something I have never done before, so this is a good reason for a visit. Also if you are a Justin Bieber fan, you should know this is the same waterfall that was featured in his music video. Skogafoss is also impressive so it’s worth checking out!
Because it’s so wet, oftentimes you will be rewarded with a colorful rainbow! I would encourage you to pack a picnic and enjoy the marvels of these natural wonders while filling your tummy.
#6 Check out a geothermal spa like the Blue Lagoon
There are many geothermal spas around Iceland, but Blue Lagoon is by far the most famous with tourists. It is definitely not the cheapest, but it is quite a unique experience with its swim up bars and silica/algae masks. If you are on a budget, you may want to check out some of the local spas in Reykjavik where the locals go.
#7 Join a walking tour of Reykjavik
Join a “free” walking tour and learn more about Iceland’s history and culture and get an overview of the sights to see in Reykjavik. The walking tours aren’t exactly free – the tour guides work off tips, but you get to choose what you think the tour was worth. I would recommend joining a walking tour as soon as you can upon arrival so you can get a taste of the city/country before you do more exploring and get valuable tips from these guides.
#8 Check out Reykjavik
Reykjavik is the biggest city in Iceland, but it is still a very small city and very walkable. The best way to explore Reykjavik is on foot. When you are exploring, don’t forget to check out Hallgrimskirkja, a church inspired by the basalt columns of Reynisfjara in Vik.
#9 Drink the world’s best-tasting and cleanest water
Iceland has an abundant supply of the cleanest water in the world, and the water is always free! Bring your own bottle and fill up anywhere and everywhere you go. Don’t spend your money buying water bottles at the store!
#10 Eat world-famous hot dog
If you are in Reykjavik, you must try the world’s best hot dog stand – Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. For the price of 420 kr ISK (or $3.43 USD) you can see what the buzz is all about. This stand has been in the same location with the same family for generation, and word is they will never move no matter what happens. It is so good that even President Clinton tried it.
Been to Iceland and have more to add to the list? Drop me a note!
