Here is a packing list to help you prepare for your backpacking trip to Havasupai.
1) Toilet paper
The campground bathrooms are actually quite equipped, and they have plenty of toilet paper available, but you don’t want to be caught without it during your hike or if the bathrooms run out of toilet paper.
2) Hand sanitizer and/or wet wipes
The campground bathrooms provide hand sanitizer, but sometimes they are out. Also you will need this along the way during your hikes or in your tent.
3) Head lamp
Or any lights. Head lamps are very convenient for walking around at night.
4) Food
Don’t over pack and save some weight. With all the hiking and the fun/exciting times, you will likely not eat as much on your trip. Also remember that you can eat breakfast before you start your hike and dinner after you are done with your trip. That saves 2 meals already!
On my trip I packed the following for food:
Breakfast – instant oatmeal, hot chocolate mix
Lunch – tuna in a pouch, snack nuts and bars
Dinner – dehydrated meals
This was more than enough. I allocated 1700 calories a day and still ended up with food leftover.
5) Water bottles and/or bladders
Pack enough water for your first day. You will not have access to water supply until you get to the village or campground. At the campground you will have access to drinkable spring water so you are fine there. To be safe you may also want to consider water filters or purifying tablets.
6) Swim suit and towel
You HAVE to play in the water. You MUST.
7) Layers and camp shoes
It does get chilly at night and even during the day when you are in the shade. Make sure you check the weather and pack appropriately. Remember camp shoes so you don’t have to walk around in your hiking shoes even at night.
8) Camp gear
Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, stoves, fuel, etc.
9) Plastic bags, zip lock bags
Good for keeping trash and wet clothes
10) Water shoes
Not a must have but really nice to have!
11) Camera
It’s so pretty you don’t want to miss out! You may want to consider a GoPro or other water cameras for playing in the water.
12) Extra batteries or chargers
For all your electronic needs. Not a must have but nice to have.
13) Sunscreen
14) Trekking poles
They really help with the downhill hike.
