What’s a visit to Vancouver without trying out the delicious food this city has to offer? During my visit earlier this year, I found myself eating meals every hour just to make sure I get to try some of the food. I stayed around the Richmond area, so I will be featuring Asian food around the Richmond area. Happy eating!
1) Sun Sui Wah
Dimsum is pretty good here. Not the cheapest (~$5 CAD per dish, but then USD is very strong). Portions are pretty generous, with big shrimps included in “har gow” and lots of meat in “siu mai.” I also tried the “durian mochi” dessert here which was surprisingly good.
This place is known for its seafood and squab (pigeon) for dinner. I didn’t try dinner here but it does look pretty good.
There are two locations. One in Vancouver and one in Richmond. I went to the one in Richmond.
HK style cafe with a very extensive menu. The menu includes noodles and rice dishes as well as bubble tea and simple Asian desserts. It is open 24/7, so it’s a good place for late night eats, if everything is closed.
Shanghai food. Good value. Food is pretty good too. I like the xiao long bao and zha jiang mian here. The beef rolls are pretty good too.
4) Dinesty
Another place to get dumplings. It’s a chain so there are multiple locations. Feels like a Din Tai Fung, with good decor and great presentation of food. Xiao long bao was not too bad (but not the best). A pretty extensive menu too, with breakfast and dinner items.
Try the famous “wife cakes” here
Sushi
While Vancouver is known for its seafood/sushi, I found that I can’t just go into any sushi place and expect good quality. I tried some that were highly recommended in blogs, but I end up being disappointed because it was just cheap sushi.
I’ve only found a couple of quality places (sister restaurants), but they are both pretty pricey. They are great for business travel!
1) Minami
Pretty upscale, in a good area of town. Try their aburi sushi. It is pretty good!
2) Miku Waterfront (sister restaurant to Minami)
Next to waterfront. I would only go here on a good day. I had their aburi chirashi tart, and it was really good. For dessert they are known for green tea opera.
Dessert places
Asian desserts are generally pretty good everywhere. The places I visited were:
1) Bubble Queen
They serve bubble tea and HK style waffles, but I find their flavors/mixes to be very unique. For example, besides the traditional bubble tea flavors and toppings, they offer mochi in place of boba. For the waffles, you can have mango and taro fillings if you choose. They also have some buttered bread dessert that seems interesting. Definitely worth trying for variety sake. It’s very close to the airport too!
2) Mango Yummy
Mango everything!
